Growing methods and materials

DSC_0181.JPG

No pesticides.

No herbicides.

No commercial fertilizers.

No commercial potting soil.

Our trees are grown in soil made from our chicken produced compost that includes collected leaf litter, landscaping waste, rice hulls, charcoal, and other organic materials diverted from the local waste stream and of course chicken manure. This mix encourages the growth of beneficial soil microbes and mycorrhizal fungi.

Trees are grown in a variety of recycled containers, m-star containers, air prune boxes, and as polycultures in our food forest beds. Air prune boxes, air boxes for short, have proven the most economical and least labor intensive method overall for producing seedlings. Thanks to Edible Acres for sharing information on air prune box methods.
